Russia and EU to expand channels of dialogue
02:24

Top diplomats from Russia and the European Union (EU) said the two sides will boost communication, despite their differences, in a joint statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell. The two were speaking after Borrell wrapped up a rare visit to Moscow on Saturday.

Tensions between the two sides were further heightened on Friday, following the alleged poisoning and imprisonment of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny over an embezzlement case. Russia had also expelled diplomats from Poland, Germany and Sweden for attending unsanctioned protests in support of Navalny last month. The embassies said their diplomats were attending the rallies as observers.

CGTN explains how Borrell's visit could be the start of rebuilding trust between the two, despite a low point in ties.
