Over 100,000 people took to the streets of Myanmar's biggest city of Yangon on Monday to protest last week's military takeover and call for the release of senior officials, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

It marked the third day of street demonstrations.

Wang Yuezhou, a China Media Group (CMG) reporter, said at least 1,000 protesters had gathered outside the Yangon city government building by 8 a.m. Numbers continued to swell as more protesters gathered at different locations to cross 100,000 as of 10:00 a.m., according to estimates.

A nationwide strike involving civil servants, factory workers, lawyers, teachers and medical staff was also staged on the same day, paralyzing some local government departments.

Police in the capital Nay Pyi Taw have used water cannons to disperse protesters.
