Two people died and dozens were injured in a blast in the city of Benxi, northeast China's Liaoning Province, local authorities said Monday.

The blast happened at around 10:50 a.m. on Monday in one pharmaceutical company's workshop in the city's high-tech zone, according to authorities.

Two people who were seriously injured in the blast died in a hospital despite emergency treatment.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.
