Everton sealed an astonishing 5-4 fifth-round victory over Tottenham Hotspur into the FA Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday as Barcelona's hopes of winning the Copa del Rey left hanging after Sevilla won the first leg of their semi-final 2-0.

With an extra-time goal, substitute Bernard fired Everton into the FA Cup quarter-finals over Hotspur.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane's late header had leveled it up at 4-4 to send a see-saw tie into extra time at Goodison Park and it was Bernard who settled it with a superb finish.

Tottenham controlled the opening half hour with an early lead but Everton struck three times in seven minutes to turn the tie on its head.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin blasted the equalizer in the 36th minute before setting up Richarlison two minutes later to put Everton ahead.

Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty appeared to be a hammer blow to his old club but Erik Lamela's close-range finish threw Jose Mourinho's team a lifeline in first-half stoppage time.

Defender Sanchez poked home Tottenham's equalizer in the 57th minute but Richarlison's superb finish restored Everton's lead 10 minutes later.

Kane, on as a 53rd-minute substitute, had been relatively quiet for Tottenham but headed his side's second equalizer of the night from Son Heung-min's superb cross.

The frenetic pace dropped a little in extra time but Bernard was played in by Sigurdsson's superb chip and he thumped his shot past Hugo Lloris to keep alive Everton's bid for a first FA Cup triumph since 1995.

In Copa del Rey, Barcelona was stunned by Sevilla as the latter won the first leg of their semi-final 2-0.

Jules Kounde furthered his growing reputation as one of the world's most exciting central defenders by scoring a stunning goal at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan before Ivan Rakitic came back to haunt his former club by adding a second late on.

The 22-year-old Kounde dribbled past three Barca defenders and shot into the corner while Rakitic's strike turned a setback for Ronald Koeman's side into what now looks like a formidable challenge to make the final.

The winner will meet either Athletic Bilbao or Levante, who play the first leg of their semi on Thursday, in the final.

"The result is a bit unfair, the reward feels too much for them," said Koeman. "The return will be complicated at 2-0 but we have had chances and we have to keep going. At home, this team is capable of anything."

Koeman had described the cup as Barcelona's "shortest route" to a trophy this term and the sight of Kounde ghosting through his defense hardly inspires confidence ahead of next week's meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.

Barca face PSG at Camp Nou in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.
