A huge fire that erupted in a village, called "the last primitive tribe in China" by Chinese National Geography was extinguished on Sunday night, according to the local government.

The fire broke out at 5:40 p.m. in Wengding Village in southwest China's Yunnan Province, an ethnic minority village where people still live in ancient houses and maintain their traditional lifestyle, engulfing almost all homes. However, no one was injured or killed, according to local villagers.

Firefighters arrived at the scene soon after the break-out and evacuated people to safe places. So far, all the evacuated villagers are staying in a nearby hotel.

The village spans 6.3 square kilometers, and the fire was put out at midnight with concerted efforts by 1,068 firefighters.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Yang Guangwen, a villager told The Beijing News that the fire ruined 101 houses, only leaving four houses intact. As most of the villagers had relocated to new houses, no injuries were reported.

"The fire began to spread from a high place. Our houses are all made of bamboo and covered with thatch. As soon as the wind starts to blow, it blows the fire to the other houses, which start to burn. It spread so fast. Many houses were burnt down," Yang was quoted as saying.

Wengding Village had the most complete historical culture and traditional architecture of the Wa ethnicity in China. The name of the village "Wengding" in the Wa language means a place of clouds and mist.

On March 31, 2020, it was rated as a national 4A level tourist attraction by Yunnan Province.
