Moscow buried in heavy snow

The Russian capital of Moscow was buried by a heavy snowfall on Sunday, disrupting both land and air transportation. /CFP

Early on February 12, the snowfall in the city broke the previous record set in 1973. The snow reached a depth of 56 centimetres on February 13, which nearly exceeded the record high of 60 centimetres, according to the Russian FOBOS weather service. /CFP

Russia's emergency services warned people away from trees as gusts of winds could have reached 18 meters per second. /CFP

Around 60,000 people were on duty to clear the streets, said Reuters citing the Moscow mayor's office. /CFP
