A Baer's pochard, a critically endangered species of duck, was spotted in the Beihai Wetland in Tengchong City, southwest China's Yunnan Province, for the first time. Experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences later studied the footage from the bird watcher who spotted the duck and confirmed that the bird was indeed a Baer's pochard.
It is a type of migratory bird that mainly breeds in southeast Russia and northeast China.
According to investigative data from 2020, China has a total of 1,500 Baer's pochards on the mainland.
