A volunteer organization, the Guardian Angels, will ramp up patrols in the New York subway system to combat a recent surge in violent crimes, said founder Curtis Sliwa at a press conference on February 17, 2021. /VCG

Founded in 1979, the Guardian Angels is a non-profit volunteer organization for violent crimes prevention on the New York subway system. Its members usually wear red berets and red logo jackets to be identified. /VCG

According to Sliwa, 300 members will be patrolling in pairs, rather than regular groups of five or six, for more widespread coverage. /VCG

They will also be handing out fliers with instructions on what to do if being pushed onto the tracks. /VCG
