China on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack against diplomatic personnel in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), adding that it hoped the DRC government would take concrete actions to improve the security and protect all the Chinese in the DRC.
The Italian Ambassador to the DRC, Luca Attanasio, and two others were killed in a road ambush en route to visit a school feeding program, UN officials said on Monday.
The other victims were later identified as an Italian security guard and a local driver from the World Food Programme. Several others were injured.
Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told reporters on Tuesday that China was shocked by the incident.
"We feel sorry for the death of the Italian ambassador," the spokesperson said, noting that Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi is going to send condolences to his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio.
"We hope the DRC government will take concrete action to improve the security environment and provide protection to Chinese diplomatic personnel as well as other Chinese citizens in the country," the spokesperson said.
