California becomes first U.S. state to top 50,000 COVID-19 deaths

At least 50,992 people have died of the coronavirus in California, which on Wednesday became the first U.S. state to pass 50,000 deaths related to the virus, according to an NBC News tally.

The most populous U.S. state also leads the country in infections, with over 3 million cases registered since the beginning of the pandemic.
