A one-year-old female Asian elephant celebrated her first birthday on Monday at the Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center in Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna, southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The staff members prepared a special birthday cake made of fruits and vegetables, including dragon fruit, cucumbers, corn, carrots and bananas. The elephants enjoyed the feast.

The center is the only domestic scientific research base that focuses on Asian elephant rescue and breeding research. So far, the number of wild Asian elephants in China has increased from fewer than 200 at the end of the last century to nearly 300.
