North China's Shanxi Province issued a red alert for blizzard on Wednesday afternoon. Many southern cities in the province have been hit by heavy snow, which has blocked highways and left vehicles stranded. Highway traffic police have been busy redirecting traffic and fire fighters have helped rescue those trapped in the snow. The snow stopped falling in most places on Thursday morning, but local officials warned of icy roads.
