Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has stressed improving the social security system that covers the entire population and promoting high-quality and sustainable development of social security.

Xi made the remarks while presiding over a group study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Friday.

China has built a fully functional social security system, the largest of its kind in the world, with its basic medical insurance covering over 1.36 billion people and basic old-age insurance covering nearly 1 billion people, according to Xi.

This has laid a solid foundation for the people for a better life, provided strong support for winning the battle against poverty, and provided favorable conditions for completing the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects on schedule, Xi said.

Meanwhile, he added that the country's social security system is still inadequate, calling for more efforts to upgrade.

The major contradiction facing Chinese society has changed, and urbanization, aging population, and the diversification of employment channels have developed at a faster pace, Xi said.

Noting that the fifth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee has made clear the blueprint for the development of China's social security in the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), Xi called for efforts in grasping the new requirements of the new stage, new concept and new pattern of development.

He mentioned increasing risk awareness to better plan the future work, such as studying the future development trends of China's aging population, increasing average life expectancy, increasing years of schooling, and changing labor force structure.

Strengthening social security work from the aspects of legislation, law enforcement, administration of justice and law-abiding is important, Xi said, stressing that promoting the healthy development of social security undertakings is on the track of the rule of law.

We should put people first, pursue common prosperity, take improving people's well being and promoting social equity as the fundamental starting point and goal of developing social security undertakings, and ensure that all people can benefit more fairly and thoroughly from the fruits of reform and development, Xi noted.
