China's central government officials have solicited opinions from people of different backgrounds in Hong Kong, with the aim of improving the city's electoral system.

The two-day symposium wrapped up in the southern city of Shenzhen on Monday.

Xia Baolong, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and head of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, attended the symposium.

Xia stressed that the Chinese government is firm in its determination to implement the principle of "One Country, Two Systems."

Fully implementing "patriots governing Hong Kong" is key to ensuring the steady and sustained implementation of "One Country, Two Systems," he noted.

Xia thus called for prompt efforts to improve related systems to ensure the power of the HKSAR stays in the hands of patriots.

The attendees reached a consensus on implementing "patriots governing Hong Kong," saying it is the essence of "One Country, Two Systems."

They agreed that one of the direct causes for chaos in the HKSAR is that the principle of 'patriots governing Hong Kong' has not yet gone into effect in all the relevant sections of society and called for improving Hong Kong's electoral system in accordance with the law as soon as possible.
