Officials and leaders gathered online for the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council to discuss poverty alleviation and the protection of human rights on Friday.

With China recently declaring its achievements in eliminating extreme poverty, Su Guoxia director-general of General Affairs Department from China National Rural Revitalization Bureau, attended the event and shared the country's experience via video message. Su spoke about how people were always first and foremost on the country's strategy out of poverty.

"We've pursued inclusive development, protecting the rights of women, children, the elderly, disabled, and ethnic minorities. They are key groups, and we've taken special care of them. We've especially worked to help women. Poor women improved their capability to run their own businesses, and subsequently help others earn an income," she said.

Sonnia-Magba Bu-Buakei Jabbi, director of demographic of health and social statistics at Research and Innovation of Sierra Leone called for efforts to empower adolescents and give them a stronger voice.

"Improving access to quality education and vocational training, increasing children's and adolescents' voices, monitoring expenditures, strengthening district level plans and budgets, building child responsive budgets and institutionalizing mobile technologies to support voice and participation," he said.

Maximo Torero, chief economist at the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization also underscored the importance of poverty alleviation, saying it can benefit humanity as a whole. 

It is just like what Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, once said: "Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice."
