A spokesperson for China's top political advisory body on Wednesday stressed the importance of "patriots governing Hong Kong" in implementing the principle of "One Country, Two Systems".
The remarks were made by Guo Weimin during a media conference ahead of the fourth session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) scheduled to start in Beijing on Thursday.
Talking about the economic slowdown in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), he noted that both the pandemic and the chaos brought by a movement against a now abandoned fugitive bill affected growth. In this backdrop, he highlighted the role of the national security legislation in ensuring HKSAR's stability and development.
The HKSAR is an important converging point for domestic and international circulation, Guo said, adding that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area also helped businesses in the HKSAR.
He said the CPPCC National Committee convened consultative meetings on related issues to provide better suggestions to the central government for making decisions.
