Chinese drone maker launches first immersive drone kit

Chinese drone maker DJI has introduced a kit that allows users to take nimble virtual first-person flights and experience from the drone's perspective on what "fly like a bird" means.

The Shenzhen-based company on Tuesday released its latest product line, claiming the new suite of equipment – including a drone, a controller, a goggle, among other accessories – "reinvents" the drone-flying experience.

With the help of goggles and the single-hand motion controller, even an amateur user can remotely navigate the 420-gram racing drone to explore the skies. The drone is mounted with a camera that's capable of taking 4K videos. It also transmits high-definition live stream video back to the goggle at a range up to 10 kilometers, said the company.

"It can fly like a racer, hover like a traditional drone, accelerate like a homebuilt project and stop faster than any of them," DJI Europe's Creative Director Ferdinand Wolf said in a press statement.

The drone is also embedded with an array of flight safety features that command the drone to make emergency brake or hovering moves. It is also armed with GPS-based geofencing to advise pilots of airspace restrictions and potential hazards, to warn users when manned aircraft are nearby, said the company.

The worldwide commercial drone market was valued at almost $1.6 billion in 2019, and the sales could reach $8.5 billion by 2027, according to Fortune Business Insights. "An increase in demand for unmanned aerial vehicles and their components due to high adoption in various industries is projected to spur market growth during the forecast period," said the report.

The global COVID-19 pandemic could also create demand for drone makers as they are tasked to conduct air delivery to reduce human contact, according to the research firm.

"The successful design for small remote-controlled aircraft has now become the most popular commercial industry from the past few years around the world," said the report.
