The Chang'e-5 lunar probe started its 23-day space journey carrying a variety of plant seeds, including 40 grams of rice seeds, on November 24. These seeds traveled through the Van Allen belts and encountered violent sunspot activity during the trip. It marked the first time Chinese researchers conducted mutation breeding experiments in outer space. The seeds later successfully returned to Earth with the spacecraft. These precious rice seeds are being planted in labs and soil at South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou, south China. As we can see in this livestream, the seeds have germinated.
