Public health legislation strengthened to support COVID-19 response: NPC spokesperson

Zhang Yesui, spokesperson for the fourth session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) stressed that legislation work in public health was strengthened to support the COVID-19 response over the past year.

He made the remarks during Thursday's press conference when answering a reporter's question on the NPC's legislative priorities since the third session of the 13th NPC.

The spokesperson said that the legislative work can be characterized as of "great-quantity, high-quality and fast-paced."

Talking about the achievements in legislation, Zhang highlighted the legal guarantee in maintaining the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, referring to the national security legislation for Hong Kong.

Noting the agenda of the session to deliberate the draft amendment to the Organic Law of the NPC and the draft amendment to the Rules of Procedure for the NPC, Zhang pointed out that the work is to better meet new expectations of the people.

He then stressed the importance of the NPC, saying that the People's Congress system is an important part of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics and accords with China's national conditions and reality.

"The People's Congress system is the best organizational form for the people to be masters of the country," he said.

The spokesperson said that the system can better advance the rule of law in all respects effectively and ensure the coordinated and efficient operation of state organs.

The 13th NPC, the country's top legislature, will open its fourth annual session in Beijing on Friday.
