In the game from two weeks ago, Juventus showed hubris in their loose passing and easy-going pace, and it caused them to get caught out twice. In this, the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie with the Liga NOS contenders, they turned that on its head and threw everyone forward from the opening whistle.

This led to an excellent chance in the third minute for Alvaro Morata; directly in front of Porto keeper Agustin Marchesin, he got on the end of a whipping cross from Juan Cuadrado and pinged the ball directly at the goal – only for Marchesin to get a hand on it at the very last moment.

If Juventus had learned to take their opponents seriously, they still hadn't learned to show them respect. All the crowding at the Porto end left acres of space down the Juventus end.

All it took was for left back Zaidu Sanusi to press down on his accelerator and he was gone. He linked up with Mehdi Taremi, a goalscorer from the previous match, and it took a Leonardo Bonnucci deflection to make sure he didn't do it again.

After Porto's first dash down the pitch, Juventus went back to trying to force a goal en masse, again leaving all the space down their own end and Porto – solid in a collapsing 4-4-2 – kept stealing possession and going for it.

In the 17th minute this paid off as, in the scramble, Taremi got tagged in the penalty box by Merih Demiral and went down. His fall was theatrical, the replay made it look minor, VAR said no problem and awarded Porto with a penalty. Sergio Oliveira converted it two minutes later. The underdogs had done it again

The intensity Juventus had in the opening five minutes hadn't only fizzled out, going 3-1 down on aggregate didn't even light a spark and Porto took more chances.

The Portuguese side didn't have to force these attempts. Their two-goal advantage let them sit deep and control the tempo. When the second half began, however, they were too complacent, sitting in a 6-2-2 formation on the edge of their own box.

That set-up allowed Juventus to work from the perfect goal targeting range and in the 48th minute Bonnucci curled the ball up and over to Ronaldo in the box who smartly let it drop to a standstill for Federico Chiesa to smash it in like the Sundance Kid.

One and a half games later, now Juventus were alive and Porto had no idea what to do. Taremi drew two yellow cards in two minutes – one for a late tackle, one for lashing out after a stoppage – to be sent off.

This must have been what Juventus were saving their energy for. It can't be stressed enough; this was a totally different team. They were running rings around 10-man Porto. Just before the hour mark, Ronaldo led the Bianconeri in a breathless sprint down the pitch which ended on Cuadrado crossing all the way across to the far post. Cheisa was there to head it in from the goal line itself.

The whole tie was on its head at 3-3. Juventus' old squad couldn't maintain the pace, and Porto were rattled and a man down. Chiesa had several good chances on the left and, in the dying moments, Cuadrado had a curler that bounced off the crossbar. It wasn't enough.

As standard for games that reach extra time, the frustration that had been mounting boiled over. Three yellow cards were handed out in 15 minutes and if a player breathed too closely on another, they dropped to the ground begging for a foul.

Juventus' Adrien Rabiot picked up the fourth yellow in the 114th for bulldozing Juan Diaz, setting up a free kick some distance away from the Juve box. Oliveira, who took the penalty all those hours ago, stepped up and then ran up to take the free kick from very far away. This eccentric tactic worked: Juventus jumped too early and the ball sailed under them. Keeper Wojciech Szczesny saw it too late and got fingertips to it as it went into the bottom left corner.

4-2 to Porto, 4-3 overall. Juventus needed two now to draw and there were only five minutes remaining. Game on? Rabiot atoned for his mistake instantly with ha header down the Porto end. 4-3, 4-4 overall with Porto winning on away goals. Juventus couldn't do it. 10-man Porto bit down on their collective gum shield and ground it out.

Cristiano Ronaldo came to Juventus to win the Champions League with a third club. Instead, since his arrival in the 2018/19 season, Juventus have bottled it against increasingly small opponents: Real Madrid then Ajax in the quarterfinals, then Olympique Lyon and now Porto in the Round of 16. It's safe to say his Italian dream is over.
