Myanmar has recalled its ambassador to the UK after he called on for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and U Win Myint.

In his statement issued on Monday, Ambassador Kyaw Zwar Minn said, "An ambassador is a diplomat. He therefore chooses the diplomatic path. The answer to the current crisis can only be at the negotiations table."

Calling for the release of Suu Kyi and Win Myint, he said his remarks doesn't mean he was "betraying the country," adding that he was standing on "middle" ground.

"I don't want to see citizens of Myanmar dying. I am arguing for all (protesters and military) to stop. The country is already so divided and at risk of possible civil war. I want peace."

Myanmar's state TV MRTV said since the ambassador "did not conduct himself in accordance with given responsibilities and an order (is issued) to summon and transfer him back to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs."

Last week, Myanmar's embassy in Washington also signaled a break with the military, issuing a statement decrying the deaths of civilians protesting against the military takeover and calling on authorities to "fully exercise utmost restraint."

A one-year state of emergency was declared in Myanmar after Win Myint and Suu Kyi, along with other officials from the National League for Democracy (NLD), were detained by the military on February 1.

The military denied that its "takeover" was a "coup," saying the armed forces had no choice but to take power because fraud in a November election was not addressed.
