The Pentagon approved a request on Tuesday to keep about 2,300 National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., to help protect the U.S. Capitol for two more months.
The National Guard troops have been dispatched since the Capitol riots on January 6. Currently, 5,200 National Guard troops are patrolling the Capitol.
The Pentagon said they will work with Capitol Police to reduce the troop presence "as conditions allow," in the next two months.
