According to the U.S. box office tracking website Box Office Mojo, Chinese comedy film "Hi, Mom" has grossed $783 million (5.1 billion yuan) as of Wednesday, making it officially one of the top 100 highest-grossing films in the world.
Currently, two Chinese films are among the top 100 grossing films worldwide – 2017 Chinese action film "Wolf Warrior 2" ranks 72 and "Hi, Mom" comes in at 98. The box office difference between the two films is 540 million yuan.
"Hi, Mom" announced on its official Weibo account on Wednesday that the film will extend its release until April 11. Some industry analysts said the delay is expected to help "Hi, Mom" challenge the top spot at the Chinese box office.
"Judging from recent attendance figures, the Spring Festival box office has already softened," said Hong Shui, a film critic to Chongqing Economic Times, adding "the box office growth of 'Hi, Mom' has slowed, and likely to take in around 5.3 billion yuan. It's not likely to surpass 'Wolf Warrior 2.'"
Meanwhile, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, "Hi, Mom" has no plans to release overseas.
