United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday urged the international community to continue to reach all Syrians in need of humanitarian assistance.

"It is imperative that we continue to reach all Syrians in need of humanitarian assistance," the UN chief said at a press meet marking the 10th anniversary of the Syrian conflict at the UN headquarters in New York.

Guterres once again called on the international community to solve the Syrian crisis through political means as early as possible while demanding the war-torn country's Constitutional Committee to gain some substantial progress.

Ten years of conflicts have left over 400,000 Syrians dead, more than five million refugees, and six million internally displaced. However, due to the emerging crises including COVID-19 pandemic, the Syrian crisis does not grab media headlines any more, said Guterres, stressing that the situation in the Middle Eastern country is still a "nightmare."

Due to the ongoing conflicts, the basic human rights of Syrian people have suffered heavy damages, and the Syrians who live in areas controlled by terrorist organizations still suffer violence and suppression.

Warning that almost 60 percent Syrians face hunger due to the ongoing pandemic, conflicts and external sanctions, the UN chief urged the Security Council to work together to help solve the Syrian crisis under the framework of the international organization.

Guterres stressed the importance of Syria's Constitutional Committee. In his opinion, substantial progress reached by the Committee will be the first step made in solving the decade-long crisis.

"The Constitutional Committee needs to create necessary conditions to ensure Syrian refugees' safety and help them return to Syria with dignity and pay respect to the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence," said UN chief.

If the efforts fail, Guterres warned, Syrians might face a more desperate future.
