The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council on Sunday expressed strong opposition to a statement by the Group of Seven (G7) countries which "denigrated the National People's Congress (NPC)'s decision to improve the electoral system of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)," terming it an interference in China's internal affairs.
In a statement, the office's spokesperson stressed that the NPC's decision on improving HKSAR's electoral system, first of all, is an internal affair of China in which no foreign country should interfere. In addition, the spokesperson said, the move was imperative to ensuring HKSAR's long-term security and stability.
The spokesperson stressed that the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong" is essential for the implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" as well as the steady and sound development of democracy in the region.
The spokesperson said that the once-rampant unlawful activities for "Hong Kong independence" by black-clad forces were supported by certain Western countries.
Some Western countries are continuing to interfere in the HKSAR affairs in the name of "freedom and democracy" despite the fact that the situation in the region is improving, and their "political intrigue" is obvious, the spokesperson said.
Any acts of hegemony are doomed to fail, the spokesperson added.
