Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday pushed for solid plans to reach the country's "green development" goals, one of the key targets set for the country's 14th Five-Year Plan, in a meeting on China's economic development.

That would require efforts from both the government – for more regulating policies – and the market, for more technological development, according to the release published after the ninth meeting of the Central Committee for Financial and Economic Affairs. Xi is also head of that committee.

Last year, the country announced its goal of bringing carbon dioxide emissions to a peak by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

"To achieve it would be a widespread yet profound systematic economic and social revolution," Xi said in the Monday meeting, doubling down on Beijing's commitment.

Renewable energy comes into play, and more carbon sinks

At the meeting, officials highlighted the need for replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy in their call for a "new electricity system."

Replacement should take place in transportation and industrial factories, they said, urging further research in low-carbon technology.

China's renewable energy generation has grown steadily over the years, rising 8.4 percent year on year to 2.21 trillion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2020, the National Energy Administration said in late January.

Officials stressed the importance of creating more carbon sinks through afforesting land and restoring wetlands.

Carbon sinks are reservoirs such as forests, lakes and oceans that absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

China saw its forest coverage rate rise from 21.66 percent in 2015 to 23.04 percent in 2020, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

The administration has vowed to increase the country's forest coverage rate to 24.1 percent by 2025 and raise the country's forest stock volume by 1.4 billion cubic meters to reach 19 billion cubic meters in the next five years.
