A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku region, northeastern Japan at a depth of 59 kilometers on Saturday evening, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The temblor occurred at 6:09 p.m. local time (0909 GMT). The agency initially reported the quake's magnitude as 7.2 and revised it downwards later.
Officials in Miyagi Prefecture said some people were injured. A tsunami advisory was issued for the prefecture, but was lifted about an hour and a half later.
No abnormalities have been reported at nuclear power plants in the Tohoku region, including the Fukushima Daiichi plant.
