A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Saturday urged Taiwan authorities to return to the common political foundation of the 1992 Consensus and stop making hostile moves, provocations and smearing acts.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council made the remarks after Chiu Tai-san, the head of Taiwan's mainland affairs council claimed that the 1992 Consensus has sparked controversy in the island and it's unfair and unjust to conduct cross-strait exchanges based on it. 

Zhu pointed that the 1992 Consensus was reached through authorized negotiations between relevant parties from both sides of the Taiwan Straits and its process and contents are clearly documented and recorded in writing. "It has a broad foundation of public support," she added.

The Democratic Progressive Party has been unilaterally rejecting the 1992 Consensus after taking power in 2016 and tried to change the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, Zhu said.

The 1992 Consensus, a tacit agreement reached between the mainland and the then-Kuomintang authority in Taiwan in 1992, serves as the cornerstone of cross-strait relations.

It allows the mainland and Taiwan to put aside their differences so that tensions can be reduced and mutually beneficial relations sustained.
