The alpine ski World Cup season ended on a high note on Sunday, with New Zealand's Alice Robinson and Austria's Manuel Feller taking one last win each in the Swiss resort of Lenzerheide, even with trophies no longer at stake.

Italy's Marta Bassino had clinched the women's giant slalom crystal globe two weeks ago, thanks to her overwhelming lead in the standings, while Austria's Marco Schwarz secured the men's slalom trophy last weekend.

Meanwhile, the overall crystal globes, the biggest prizes of all, were guaranteed to go to France's Alexis Pinturault and Slovakia's Petra Vlhova after their performances on Saturday.

Nevertheless, the racers were keen to prove themselves one last time and grab a few more points or one last podium on Sunday to end the season in style.

In the women's giant slalom, Robinson delivered a lightning-fast second run to take the lead and even U.S. ski star Mikaela Shiffrin, who was in front after the first run, had to settle for second place, with Slovenia's Meta Hrovat finishing third.

This was a third career win for the New Zealander and marked a return to form after a disappointing season.

Tiredness, after a long World Cup season that also featured world championships, started to show among many racers however.

Bassino, who won four of the first five giant slaloms of the season, managed just a seventh place but was able to finally lift her long-awaited trophy at the end of the day.

Vlhova, who was under no pressure to deliver on Sunday with the overall globe already in the bag, came in 11th place. The Slovak raced a full program this year – 31 races in total – unlike any of her competitors, nabbing six wins and four more podiums in the process.

Her result on Sunday means she finishes the season with 1,416 points in the standings ahead of Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami with 1,256, handing Slovakia a historic first overall World Cup globe.

Ski globes for Kriechmayr, Gut-Behrami as weather chaos continues

Gut-Behrami was the topic of heated discussions online after she started the giant slalom but exited after two gates, with no visible mistake or injury, prompting many to see this as a protest.

The Swiss double world champion had been neck and neck with Vlhova for the overall trophy for months but had to watch it go to her rival, after speed events were cancelled in Lenzerheide earlier this week due to bad weather, robbing her of a chance to make up points.

On the men's side, Schwarz was on his way to another win in the men's slalom when a rare mistake by the world champion handed victory to his teammate Feller, who collected his second victory of the season with a no-holds-barred second run, ahead of France's Clement Noel and Pinturault in third.

Schwarz finished sixth but takes home the slalom crystal globe, his first, with 665 points, ahead of Noel with 553.

For Pinturault, Saturday turned into the biggest day of his career as he celebrated his 30th birthday and clinched the men's giant slalom trophy as well as the overall globe that had for so long evaded him.

Still, the French champion was back on his skis and on the slope on Sunday, powering down the course with all the speed and confidence of a fresh overall World Cup winner to win one more podium. It was his ninth in 26 races and across four disciplines this winter.

He finishes the season with 1,260 points in the overall standings, ahead of Switzerland's Marco Odermatt with 1,093.

The 2020/2021 World Cup season now draws to a close after five months of intense racing on an almost weekly basis. Next season will begin in Soelden, Austria, on October 23-24, with the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics another highlight on the calendar.
