For the first time in 30 years, four Baer's pochards were recently spotted at a coastal wetland in Shantou City, south China's Guangdong Province, according to the provincial forestry administration. The bird was last spotted in 1990 in Shenzhen City, also in Guangdong.

They usually live together with tufted duck and ferruginous pochard. They are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List and under first-class state protection in China.
