Over 74.95 million COVID-19 vaccination doses have been administered in China as of Saturday, Mi Feng, a spokesperson for the National Health Commission (NHC) said at a press conference on Sunday.

China officially started mass vaccinations on December 15, starting with high-risk groups, including medical workers, people who work or study overseas and cold-chain industry employees.

In recent months, some regions in the country have started vaccinating people who are more than 60 years old and in good health, while research and development on vaccines for the elderly is speeding up, He Qinghua, an official with the NHC told the press conference.

China's current vaccination campaign initially covers those aged between 18 and 59.

"We will start mass vaccination of the elderly after we get sufficient data from clinical trials on the effectiveness and safety of the vaccines," He said.

As China pushes its inoculation drive across the country, the authorities have again appealed to the public to follow measures including wearing masks despite having been inoculated.
