The China-U.S. Alaska meeting was timely, useful and deepened the mutual understanding between the world's two major economies, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said Monday at a daily press briefing.

Hua made the remarks when asked whether the strategic talks met China's expectations. The two-day dialogue marked the first high-level contact between the two countries after their heads of state had a phone call on the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

The two sides "conducted candid, in-depth, long-term and constructive communication on their respective domestic and foreign policies, Sino-U.S. relations, and major international and regional issues of common concern," Hua said, quoting the statement released by the Chinese delegation shortly after the meeting concluded.

She also reaffirmed China's stance on developing ties with the U.S. saying: "China hopes the U.S. will meet China halfway, and in particular, the two sides should respect each other's core interests and major concerns. It is upon this basis that the door for China-U.S. dialogue will be always open."

The two sides agreed to maintain dialogue and communication in accordance with the spirit of the call between the two heads of state, carry out mutually beneficial cooperation, prevent misunderstanding and misjudgment, avoid conflict and confrontation, and promote the healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations, noted Hua.

China also reiterated its firm stance on issues related to its sovereignty, security and development interests, she added.

The spokesperson stressed that these are matters of principle closely related to national sovereignty and territorial integrity. She urged the U.S. side not to underestimate China's determination to defend its core interests as well as the will of Chinese people in safeguarding its national dignity and legitimate rights.

As the statement noted, the U.S. side reiterated its commitment to one-China principle. The two sides also reached consensuses in specific areas such as climate change by agreeing to establish a joint working group.

The two sides also exchanged views on a series of issues such as economy and trade, the military, law enforcement, humanities, health, cyber security, climate change, Iran's nuclear program, Afghanistan, the Korean Peninsula and Myanmar, and agreed to maintain and strengthen communication and coordination.
