World Water Day, held on March 22 every year, focuses on the importance of freshwater and raises awareness of the large population who can't get access to safe water. The theme of World Water Day 2021 is valuing water. It's needless to say that the value of water, this finite and irreplaceable resource, is enormous. Though 70 percent of our planet is covered by water, only 3 percent of the world's water is fresh water. According to World Wide Fund for Nature, two-thirds of the world's population may face water shortage by 2025. We need to save water to help alleviate the impending and threatening water shortages.
Here are some ways to save water in our daily life:
1. Get a low-flush toilet
Modern dual-flush systems can save a lot of water. So choose wise, save water as well as money.
2. Take shorter showers
A warm shower can reduce stress. But don't spend too much time in the shower. Limit your shower time and switch to an efficient shower head. Taking bath instead is also a good way to save water.
3. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
Why not keep your teeth healthy and save water at the same time? By turning off your tap, you can save around 12 litres of water every time you brush.
4. Turn off the water while shaving
Just as the same, turn off the tap while shaving, scrubbing your hands with soap or washing dishes.
5. Cut down on meat and dairy, and eat seasonal vegetables
It is very water-intensive to rear animals for meat and dairy. The industries also emit greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming. So reducing the intake of meat and dairy, eating seasonal vegetables can not only help save water, but also protect our climate.
6. Reduce food waste
Reducing food waste is not only beneficial for our environment, it also helps you save a lot of money. It takes a lot water to produce the food we eat, so don't waste it.
7. Grow drought-resistant plants
Many plants can thrive without much water, plus, they are usually easy to take care of!
8. Water outdoor plants during the cool parts of the day
Watering plants in the early morning can allow the water to reach the roots without much evaporating away. Watering in the early morning is preferable to watering at the end of the day as it helps prevent fungus problems.
9. Check for leaks in pipes
Sometimes you need a professional plumber to check the hidden leaks inside your home. It not only helps conserve water, but also helps cut your bill.
