The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has fired two unidentified projectiles into the East Sea, the Republic of Korea (ROK)'s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on Thursday.
The projectiles were launched into the eastern waters from DPRK's South Hamgyong Province on Thursday morning.
Yonhap news agency reported that the projectiles were estimated to be ballistic missiles.
The JCS said in a statement that the intelligence authorities of the ROK and the U.S. were analyzing further details on the projectiles.
It noted that the ROK military strengthened surveillance and was maintaining a full readiness posture in close cooperation with the U.S.
If confirmed, it would be the first ballistic missile launched by the DPRK in about a year.
The presidential Blue House said it convened an emergency session of the National Security Council (NSC) standing committee at 9 a.m. over DPRK's projectile launches.
It followed Pyongyang's test-launch on Sunday of two cruise missiles off its western coast.
According to the ROK military, the two cruise missiles were fired westward from DPRK's western coast on Sunday morning and traveled short range.
It was not in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions that ban Pyongyang from testing ballistic missiles.
DPRK's missile launch came after the ROK and the U.S. conducted their annual springtime military exercises March 8-18.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry called on all relevant parties on Thursday to settle the issue through dialogue as it serves their common interests as well as the expectation of the international community.
China has always been appealing to the relevant parties to meet each other halfway so as to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula and contribute to the long-term stability and peace in the region, said the spokesperson.
