On March 24, China's State Council Information Office released its "Report on Human Rights Violations in the United States in 2020," recording America's wanton violations of human rights and blatant disregard of international law.

The report notes that the haphazard and incompetent response of the U.S. to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a humanitarian disaster. With less than five percent of the world's population, it had nearly 20 percent of the worldwide COVID-19 death toll by the end of February.

Although it cannot provide adequate protection for its own citizens, it's still touting itself as a global human rights defender and interfering in other countries' internal affairs.

When COVID-19 hit China in early 2020, the Chinese government acted swiftly and contained its spread effectively. In sharp contrast, the U.S. government downplayed the risk and even claimed the deadly virus was a "hoax."

The information released by the Trump administration concerning the virus was erratic, characterized by rampant anti-mask and anti-vaccine rhetoric, conspiracy theories and rumors. Then President Donald Trump even raised the ridiculous idea of injecting disinfectant to kill the virus.

Some netizens commented on the situation with humor and satire:

The pandemic shows that science has been overwhelmed by politics in the U.S. And what is left for scientists to do is to debunk rumors after certain politicians made preposterous claims. This has become an "anti-pandemic spectacle" in the country.

The report also notes that the pandemic led to massive unemployment and that vulnerable groups suffered the biggest collateral damage due to the government's inept response to the pandemic.

Ethnic minorities in the U.S. suffered from systemic racial discrimination and live in appalling conditions. African-Americans were three times more likely than whites to be infected with the virus, twice as likely to die, and three times more likely to be killed by police.

According to the report, one in four young Asians might become the target of racial bullying. Racial hate crimes against Asians also remained high.

The U.S. democracy in disorder has triggered political chaos and further torn apart American society. The report points out that people's confidence in U.S. democracy has fallen to a 20-year low.

The riots at Capitol Hill triggered by the U.S. presidential election shocked people worldwide, including Americans themselves.

The U.S. Capitol riots are similar to the mob attack on the Legislative Council in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2019. They have proven that U.S. human rights and freedom have turned out to be a matter of location.

The U.S. is bent on adopting "double standards" on human rights and democracy, but it's quite single-minded in the pursuit of unilateralism. The Trump administration brazenly withdrew from important international organizations and treaties such as the WHO and the Paris Agreement, blatantly breaking international rules and laws.

Apart from withdrawal from international organizations and treaties, the U.S. has also been "quite productive" in taking unilateral sanctions.

Our cartoons only show the tip of the iceberg of the mess concerning human rights and democracy in the U.S. Even so, it seems that the United States has not given up the idea of exporting democracy to the rest of the world. But it is already in deficit. A word of advice: Just give up exporting democracy and save some for yourself!
