Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro overhauled his government Monday, changing six cabinet members including the foreign, defense, and justice ministers, the administration said in a statement.
The far-right leader, who is eyeing reelection in October 2022, is facing mounting pressure from a deadly surge of COVID-19 in already hard-hit Brazil, where the average weekly death toll has nearly quadrupled since the start of the year.
On the same day, two ministers, Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo and Defense Minister Fernando Azevedo e Silva quit, and they were joined later by Former Attorney General Andre Levi, who also published a letter of resignation.
On Thursday night, Brazil's Health Ministry reported more than 10,000 COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day increase since the pandemic began. More than 312,000 people have died from the virus so far.
