China's National People's Congress Standing Committee on Tuesday unanimously amended laws related to the selection of Hong Kong's chief executive and the formation of the region's Legislative Council. These improvements to the region's electoral system, however, have been criticized by Western countries, that alleged such changes could curb the right to dissent and oppose the government. Beijing on Wednesday hit back on critics, saying the central government will support the development of democracy in Hong Kong according to the region's unique situation.
