An eight-carriage passenger train derailed inside a tunnel in Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 9:28 a.m. on April 2.

Here's the latest:

- Official death toll now stands at 50; 49 of the deaths were identified following a DNA test

- President Xi Jinping has extended condolences to Taiwan compatriots over the accident

- Operation is still ongoing to free some of the carriages stuck in the tunnel

- Police suspect the accident occurred when a construction vehicle slid down a slope and hit the passing train at the mouth of the tunnel

- A total of 498 people, including 494 passengers, were aboard the train when the accident took place, said a Taiwan railway official on Sunday
