For the 2022 Winter Olympics, the Capital Gymnasium in Beijing is testing its facilities, services and operation in figure skating and short-track speed skating events.

Athletes are joining scheduled exercises and competitions during the 10-day testing that runs through April 10.

This arena faces a challenge. It will also be used for short-track speed skating. But there is just a two-hour period available for transitioning between both events ,as they require different ice thickness.

"We're using a new method for transitions. For both events, the ice surface is five centimeters thick. We meet the requirements of both events through changing the temperature, but not changing the ice itself," said Shen Ling, the ice transition manager. 

This method had proved efficient during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and is being tested again in this gymnasium.

There are hundreds of staff and volunteers participating in the test events. They have many responsibilities, including venue management, logistics, media support, and emergency rescue.

"Volunteers came to their posts on March 25. They've undertaken all necessary preparations and ensured everything is running smoothly," said Ding Liting, the manager for volunteers.

The ten-day testing activities at the Capital Gymnasium will last until April 10 for a comprehensive assessment on both ice-based sports.
