India logged 89,129 new cases and 714 deaths – both daily records this year – on Saturday, according to data of the federal health ministry.
The COVID-19 tally of India, the world's third-most virus hit country after the United States and Brazil, rose to 12,392,260, and the death toll surged to 164,110.
The number of daily active cases has been on the rise over the past few days, as another wave of the pandemic looms large in India.
India launched a nationwide vaccination drive in January, and so far, over 73 million people have been inoculated.
