During its 23-day space journey last year, China's Chang'e-5 lunar probe carried various plant seeds, including 40 grams of rice seeds, which traveled through the Van Allen belts and encountered sunspot eruption before returning to Earth. It was the first time that Chinese researchers had conducted mutation breeding experiments in deep space.
Upon their return, the rice seeds were planted in soil in a lab environment at South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, and grew there for more than a month.
Now, they have been transplanted into experimental fields at the university's teaching and research base in Zengcheng, a district of Guangzhou. The rice is expected to be harvested at the end of June. Check out this livestream to see the seedlings at the test spot.
