Japan's Osaka Prefecture logged a record 918 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the second day it has registered over 900 cases since Thursday, prefectural officials said.

Quasi-emergency measures against COVID-19 officially commenced on Monday in Osaka, Hyogo and Miyagi prefectures as part of efforts to stem a sharp resurgence in infections.

Japan's government placed Tokyo, Kyoto and Okinawa prefectures under new, month-long quasi-emergency measures on Friday after recent spikes in COVID-19 infections.
