At a special Ministry of Foreign Affairs event focused on China's Hubei Province, home to the once hard-hit COVID-19 city Wuhan, took place on April 12 with the theme, "Heroic Hubei: Reborn for New Glories." Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi sent a message to the international community that Beijing stands in solidarity and is ready to join hands with various countries towards defeating the COVID-19 pandemic on their shores.

The theme, the setting and the message is a testament to China's dedicated efforts in addressing the pandemic at home through a non-political, facts-based and policy-oriented manner which can assist the international community significantly.

Nothing is closer to the truth. The provincial capital of Wuhan successfully fought the virus through a centralized epidemic response system and prior experience of the Chinese population with SARS-Cov-2 which resulted in preparedness and unrelenting support to the central government's measures.

As an acknowledgement, the WHO Chief Executive Mike Ryan, in a sharp detraction from the results of Pew surveys conducted in the United States with two-thirds of Americans believing that China's handling of the pandemic was haphazard, congratulated frontline workers and acknowledged the gains made. The ability to test over 9 million people through an effective national system of contact tracing was a key enabling factor towards curbing the devastating effects of the disease in the capital.

Gregory Poland, director of the Vaccine Research Group at the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. considered China's speedy response as being the critical factor which included, among other measures, releasing the genomic sequence of the virus in January last year and enacting an array of comprehensive countermeasures in the same month.

These facts underline the spirit and strength of the response which would not have been possible without the compliance and civic sense of the Chinese people which Wang Yi alluded to. As one of the largest manufacturers of PPE or Personal Protective Equipment in the world and successfully exporting PPE to countries across the region, the compliance rate towards following standard operating procedure among the Chinese population was high.

Three Fangcang hospitals were also opened in February 2020 with public health actions undertaken between January 29 to February 29 preventing 1.4 million infections and close to 56,000 deaths.

These numbers are reflective of close coordination between government sectors and relentless civil compliance as endorsed by Dr. Han Fu at the Imperial College in London with Gregory Poland also underling the significance of the role of the civilian population which have both historically and currently eschewed hyper individualism that characterizes the United States.

An absence of an anti-science or anti-vaccine movement in the population grounded in fallacies and conspiracy theories was another contributing factor.

April 8 marked the first anniversary of the lifting of lockdowns in Wuhan which has been celebrated by the Chinese people and has become an international citation on successful pandemic measures. Wang Yi, while acknowledging how the pandemic was brought under control also hinted at the quick restoration of economic and social development with expected economic growth rates in Hubei this year projected to be 10 percent.

Hence, China's extension of assistance and solidarity to the world is based on factual evidence and a national desire to uphold multilateralism while eschewing vaccine nationalism towards shared successes for humanity at the same time. The truth is that only through consultations, dialogues, joint contributions and donations can the international community move forward in tackling the pandemic.

In a news briefing on Monday, Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has claimed that the pandemic is far from over and underlined unfortunate, undeniable realities such as confusion, inconsistency and complacency which have characterized global response efforts.

As China hails the success of its COVID-19 response in Hubei, Wang Yi's message to the international community is simple-through successful policies and experiences at home, Beijing desires to cooperate with nations in alleviating the suffering of millions of people.
