Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga headed to Washington on Thursday for a summit with U.S. President Joe Biden, Kyodo news reported.

It'll be the first in-person meeting between Biden and a foreign leader since he took office in January.

According to Kyodo's report, Suga and Biden are expected to discuss topics including the COVID-19 pandemic response, climate change and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The early media report also said Suga will use the trip to invite Biden to the Tokyo Olympics, due to begin on July 23 after a year's delay due to the pandemic.

The 72-year-old prime minister and his entourage have received vaccinations against COVID-19 before the trip.
