The Canadian province of Ontario has extended its lockdown and introduced stricter measures to contain COVID-19, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Friday. The lockdown now in effect will be prolonged until May 19, requiring residents to go out only for their basic needs.
Ford also announced restrictions on unnecessary travel and its borders with neighboring provinces will be closed beginning Monday. The provincial government will also close non-essential construction sites, limit outdoor gatherings and the capacity of essential businesses.
The province of 14 million people reported a record 4,812 new cases and 25 deaths on Friday, according to health officials.
