China is resolutely opposed to the joint statement issued by the U.S. and Japan following talks between the two countries' leaders that interfered with China's internal affairs, such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang. Yang Xiyu, a senior fellow at the China Institute of International Studies in Beijing, shares his insights on China-Japan relations. He says Japan's move damages the foundation of China-Japan relations, and the only way to seek cooperation with China and maintain a healthy bilateral relationship is to fulfill the political documents made by the two governments.
