Eleven people were killed and 98 injured in a train accident in Egypt's Qalyubia province north of Cairo, the health ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

The accident happened on Sunday after four carriages of the train, travelling from Cairo to Mansoura, derailed, the Egyptian Ministry of Transportation said.

President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has ordered the formation of a committee to present a report about the reasons for the accident. An investigation into the accident is underway with the train driver and his assistant, as well as eight other officials at the Toukh train station, the office of the Public Prosecutor said.

This comes less than a month after a deadly train crash in southern Egypt, in which at least 20 people were killed and nearly 200 were injured when two trains collided near Tahta, about 440km (275 miles) south of Cairo.

Egypt's transportation minister Kamel al-Wazir, a former army general, has faced calls to resign from some Egyptians on social media. He has rejected to step down and said he would keep working on developing the aging rail network.
