Surfing is a competitive extreme sport that started in California and then traveled to Peru, Australia and South Africa. China's national surfing team was established in 2017. Surfing has become more and more popular in China in recent years, and significant improvements were achieved in both national and personal rankings.

Located in Wanning on the south coast of Hainan, Riyue Bay, or sun and moon bay, is known as the best surfing spot in China. Surfers from all over the world flock there for international surfing events. 

It is also where the Chinese national surfing team is based. CGTN's Yang Xinmeng was challenged to learn surfing with the national team within two days.
