China expressed deep condolences over the passing of Chadian President Idriss Deby, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday.

President Deby died on Tuesday from injuries he received on the frontline in a fight against rebels, according to a statement read on national television by the spokesperson for the Chadian army, General Azem Bermandoa Agouna.

"China expresses its deep condolences and sincere sympathies to the government and people of Chad and the family of President Idriss Deby," Wang told a press briefing.

Deby was devoted to the cause of China-Chad friendship and contributed greatly to deepening the bilateral all-weather partnership, Wang said.

The Chadian army has confirmed that General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, a four-star general and Deby's son, will replace him as head of the military council.

Chad has imposed a curfew and shut the borders after Deby's death, according to the country's army.
