Former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter for pinning George Floyd to the pavement with his knee on Floyd's neck on April 20. The case sparked worldwide protests, violence and a furious reexamination of racism and policing in the U.S.

The 12-member jury found Chauvin, 45, guilty of all charges including second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. The decision was made after three weeks of testimony from 45 witnesses, including bystanders, police officials and medical experts. People gathered in what is now known as George Floyd Square to celebrate the verdict.
